I love how balanced but also compelling this is. I feel like this is a piece I can share with anyone on any side of the political fence and they will be able to understand it. That is a lot more than I can say for almost anyone writing about anything cultural nowadays. Also, your photos/landscape look very familiar. We’re not far from gold country—a little closer to the coast :)
We homeschool, too, and every August I question myself like you do. We’ve been doing it since before COVID, and I sometimes question myself because our church has a Catholic school, too… but for our lifestyle this works better. (We live on a mountain, and my husband’s business is based from home. We have more flexibility.)
I meant to add, I had my children do a standardized test for the first time just to make sure they weren’t “behind” compared to kids their age, and they did quite well, even in subjects we don’t emphasize… which I attribute to them being insatiable readers.
